A friend of mine had their site hacked this morning. I wanted to let you all know about this as they have VBulletin, which I thought was a secure program.

I will let you guys know what happened when I find out and make sure that I let you know who is responsible so that you can protect yourselves from them in some way, if possible. LOL, hackers aren't easy to protect against as you all know.

This is all I know at this time and will keep you updated when I find out more.

Yeah, latest version. But they have things under control now. They are now having other problems, such as having to look into a dedicated server because they are so busy on that site. It has been down now for about a week and a half trying to get things ironed out with their hosting company. But no problems with the hackers anymore.

Well, the closest thing we had to this would be apoc, but I don't think that really affected us.

Everyone makes out that vbulletin is a really secure piece of forum software, when infact its not. Its not even software!!! All vbulletin is, is a load of files with code in which connect to a mysql database, gather the data, and display it in the browser window.

Some people say that phpBB is easy to hack because it is free, which means more people have access to the code to find out any ways to hack. Where as vbulletin has a large price tag, therefore hackers dont have it, and cannot find any security holes in the code. Thats completly wrong!!! Any computer noob can get hold of a free copy of vbulletin.

The coding in vbulletin is better than in phpBB (hence the price tag) but its never possible to prevent hackers. Once they have access to the code, they will be able to hack it within a month. My advice is to always keep the latest version, thats all you can do. Never decide to stick with the version you have got. If you do, there will be a step by step guide on how to hack the version you have in no time.

P.S. This is going to be my last post for quite a while now. I will inform you all when i return.
